Sicily Boutique Coffee

Sicily Boutique Coffee is the exclusive limited-edition artisan coffee collection that Morettino dedicates to Sicily, its culture, flavors and aromas. Precious and colorful gift boxes and soft packages of freshly ground coffee are the main characteristics of the collection that underlines the strong bond between Morettino and its land

“I Pupi siciliani”

The Sicily Boutique Coffee – I Pupi siciliani line is a tribute to the Sicilian puppet theater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The project sees the collaboration of the Antonio Pasqualino Puppet Museum in Palermo, the most important collection in the world dedicated to the Opera dei pupi.

The stories of the Sicilian puppets are the result of the revisitation of the poems of the Carolingian cycle - among them the Chanson de Roland - of Orlando furioso and of La Gerusalemme liberata, combined with the stories of the paladins of France and the epic tales of the Crusades and battles against the Mori.

With the limited edition of "Sicily Boutique Coffee – I Pupi siciliani" Morettino has created precious packages conceived and designed by Palermo designers, which narrate the Puppet Theater through the deeds of the main protagonists: Charlemagne, Orlando, Rinaldo and Angelica. Charlemagne is the Holy Roman Emperor at the head of an army of valorous paladins. Orlando and Rinaldo are the knights of Charlemagne, each other cousins and rivals for the love of Angelica, the beautiful princess of Cathay, object of desire of the paladins of France.

In the tradition of the Sicilian puppet theater, each puppet has its own iconography, characterized by certain colors and stylistic details different for each character, which allowed the public to easily identify each paladin during the shows. There are two most important puppet schools, the one from Palermo and the one from Catania. In the decorations of the limited edition Sicily Boutique Coffee Morettino has chosen to represent the iconography of the Palermo Puppet School. Morettino's "coffee paladins" take on a modern guise, which recalls Pop Art, while respecting the dictates of the iconography of the Palermo school.

The project was created to celebrate two icons of Sicilian culture in the world: the Opera dei Pupi and coffee.

Sicily, in fact, has played an important role in the spread of coffee in Europe over the centuries: the Arabs first brought the "Wine of Allah" to the island, while it was Procopio Cutò from Palermo who founded the first café in Paris in 1686. In addition coffee, especially the one prepared with a moka, is a real ritual in Sicily, a symbol of sharing and conviviality famous throughout the world.

For this reason, inside the Sicily Gift Boxes there are also Moka pots, an invitation to rediscover slowness through a ritual made up of ancient and familiar gestures.

Family blend

Inside the cans and soft packages of Sicily Boutique Coffee there is a special recipe created by Morettino master roasters as a tribute to tradition, following the old family recipes.

An exclusive blend of freshly ground artisan coffee, with a vigorous, typically Mediterranean character. Its velvety and persistent taste leads on a journey of taste through the scents and flavors of Sicily.

"Sicily Boutique Coffee" Gift Boxes

An exclusive limited edition coffee line dedicated to the island as a tribute to its millenary traditions.

The "Sicily Boutique Coffee Gift Boxes" are elegant caskets containing the scents and flavors of our land, born thanks to the collaboration with small artisans of the area.

Inside the Gift Boxes there are some of the symbols of the Sicilian tradition: the elegant coffee cans representing Charlemagne, Orlando, Rinaldo and the Sicilian Cart, the beautiful colored coffee pots signed by Morettino, a precious Sicilian ceramic pine cone, created by hand by the Palermo artisan Elisabetta Castagnetta, according to the ancient tradition of the island.

The coffee cans are designed by young designers from Palermo and reflect the iconography of the paladins of the Sicilian puppet school, revisited in a modern style. They contain a special blend of freshly ground coffee, roasted by Morettino master roasters according to the family recipe. The ceramic pine cone, on the other hand, is made by craftsmen in the laboratory of the ceramist Elisabetta Castagnetta, who has been passionately pursuing the ancient art of Sicilian ceramics for years. Each single bract of the pine cone is made using the fingers of the hands. The majesty of the pine cone is completed by the enamel firing, which enhances the details.

The ceramic pine cone is one of the most loved Sicilian icons in the world. It is a symbol of prosperity and happiness: according to Sicilian popular tradition, giving ceramic pine cones is good luck.

The "Morettino for Sicilian puppets" campaign and the restoration of Charlemagne's ancient puppet

Behind the launch of these two new products is the desire to preserve the Teatro dei Pupi (Puppet Theater), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which risks being undercut becauses of the economic crisis we are experiencing. Due to the necessary health restrictions, which led to the cancellation of the shows, the impossibility of a new program and the disappearance of tourist flows, most of the historic families of puppeteers on the island risk closing their business forever.

This is the reason why Morettino, which has always paid attention to the spread of culture and partner of the Puppet Museum, has launched the #MorettinoperiPupiSiciliani initiative over the last few months: for each coffee or Gift Box of the "Sicily Boutique Coffee" line sold, 10% will support the Pasqualino Museum and the Italian network of organizations for the protection, promotion and enhancement of the Opera dei Pupi, the association recognized by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Tourism that brings together the historic families of puppeteers from all over Sicily.

Morettino also finances the restoration by the Pasqualino Museum of the puppet representing Charlemagne, an armed puppet of the Palermo School built by the puppeteer Francesco Paolo Di Giovanni in the sixties of the last century and kept inside the Palermo museum. Restoration operation will be completed in the coming months and will allow to save a small piece of history of the local culture.
